Key Points
- Intel investing €5 billion to expand chip manufacturing at its Leixlip campus in Ireland
- Expansion will boost production of Intel Xeon 6 processors for AI and high-performance computing
- Intel has invested over €30 billion in Ireland since establishing operations in 1989
Intel said on Monday it would invest €5 billion ($5.7 billion) to expand its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Leixlip, Ireland, increasing production capacity for processors used in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing.
The investment will upgrade existing fabrication facilities and install new manufacturing equipment to increase output of Intel Xeon 6 processors and future Xeon chips built on the company’s Intel 3 process technology.
The company said construction and equipment installation began earlier this year. The project will also expand the campus’s automated manufacturing infrastructure and create construction jobs, along with additional permanent positions at the site.
The announcement comes as global semiconductor manufacturers increase investments to meet rising demand for AI infrastructure, while governments seek to strengthen domestic chip manufacturing and reduce reliance on overseas supply chains.
Intel said the Leixlip campus, established in 1989, employs about 4,900 people. The company has invested more than €30 billion in Ireland since entering the country.
The expansion is expected to support Intel’s foundry operations and increase manufacturing capacity for enterprise and data centre processors.
