For citizens and businesses involved in litigation against the Centre, the platform signals a shift toward centralised tracking of government cases. The Department of Legal Affairs manages LIMBS, which has been operational since February 2016.

How the LIMBS platform works

LIMBS functions as a case management system, a software tool that digitises legal paperwork and tracks deadlines, hearings and outcomes in one place. Before such systems, government departments often managed case records manually across scattered offices.

The platform covers what officials describe as the complete lifecycle of a case. This includes the initial filing, interim orders, adjournments, arguments and final judgement. Each ministry and department can access cases relevant to its work.

Empanelled counsels, the private lawyers hired by the government to argue cases, can update case status directly on the system. Law officers, including the Attorney General and Solicitor General’s offices, also have access.

Government litigation in India

The Centre is among the largest litigants in Indian courts. Cases range from tax disputes and service matters involving government employees to constitutional challenges and contract disagreements.

Meghwal provided the information in a written reply to a parliamentary question. The minister holds independent charge of the and is also Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.

The government has not disclosed the total number of cases currently tracked on LIMBS or whether the platform will be expanded to include state government litigation.
