PM Narendra Modi to address University of Mysore centenary convocation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Centenary Convocation 2020 of the University of Mysore on October 19 at 11:15 AM, via , said a statement from Prime Minister’s Office.

The Governor of Karnataka, along with other dignitaries of the University, would be present on the occasion. Members of Syndicate and Academic Council, MPs, MLAs, MLCs, Statutory Officers, District Officers, Former Vice Chancellors of the University and students & parents will witness the Convocation online, said PMO.

Due to government’s restriction on large gathering because of Coronavirus , only 30 students who have bagged medals and prizes will receive their certificates from Crawford Hall in the University in the first half.

The University will held a ceremony in the afternoon at the same venue to give away the degree certificates to all the students in groups of 25 each. As many as 29,018 students will be conferred with different degrees.

Since it is centenary convocation, the varsity has made arrangements for all the students to receive their degree certificates in person, said Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore G. Hemanth Kumar while briefing reporters on details of the arrangements made for the convocation, reported The Hindu.

The convocation was originally scheduled to be held in March this year, however, it had to be put off due to pandemic.

The centenary convocation will begin at 10.30 a.m. and the Prime Minister’s address will be held between 11.15 a.m. and 11.40 a.m. The proceedings of the centenary convocation can be watched virtually on University of Mysore’s official website, uomlive the YouTube channel and UoM’s Facebook page.

The University of Mysore was established on 27th July, 1916. It was the Sixth University in the country and first in the State of Karnataka. The University was founded by Maharaja of erstwhile Princely State of Mysore, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and the then Diwan Sir M.V. Visvesvaraya.

For the first time in the University of Mysore’s history, the country’s Prime Minister will address the convocation.
