Dhaka — The general members of the Grameenphone Employees Union have organized a human chain to demand the reinstatement of 159 laid-off employees of Grameenphone. The demand was made from a human chain organized in front of the National Press Club on Saturday.
The incident was strongly condemned and protested. Speakers at the human chain said that in the last few months, Grameenphone authorities have stopped the work of 167 workers in the name of restructuring the department. The Grameenphone Employees Union delegation was working with the Grameenphone Authority to resolve this issue.
Grameenphone Employees Union (GPEU), currently the only union in Grameenphone, has the right to conduct activities as CBA and was in talks to bring 167 employees back to work accordingly.
Grameenphone authorities have been procrastinating for months and the 167 people who have stopped work are not giving any proper solution. Then Grameenphone Employees Union approached the law for a fair solution to the issue.
The matter is currently pending in the High Court. However, while the matter was pending, the Grameenphone authorities, without showing the slightest respect to the Hon'ble Court fired 159 employees completely illegally through an email at 5 pm yesterday (June 25).
Speakers from the human chain demanded that these 159 workers be reinstated in their jobs without delay. If the Grameenphone Authority promptly rescinds 159 employees, the Grameenphone Employees Union will do its utmost to protest against this injustice legally, socially, at the national level, and in collaboration with all trade unions, media, and like-minded parties. Grameenphone authorities will be forced to reinstate these 159 employees.
At the human chain, Grameenphone Employees Union General Secretary Mia Shafiqur Rahman Masud and other leaders spoke. Hundreds of general workers were present at the time.
