Software has announced an expansion of its partnership with , aimed at enhancing data protection services for users. This development introduces ‘‘, a new Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) solution tailored for Microsoft 365.

Cirrus by Veeam is a first-party BaaS product designed to secure data in Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure. This product is a result of Veeam's acquisition of Cirrus software in October 2023 and its development team from Australian company CT4. Cirrus is a cloud-native application developed in Microsoft Azure, predominantly functions-based and serverless, providing a multi-tenant, multi-tier frontend for Veeam Backup 365.

Previously, Veeam's BaaS was available solely through channel partners, including Veeam cloud service providers (VCSPs). The launch of Cirrus allows Veeam partners to whitelabel and resell it. Additionally, for the first time, customers can directly purchase from Veeam.

The company anticipates that the new BaaS capabilities will bolster support for Microsoft 365 Backup Storage.

“Businesses today require assurance of their critical data protection. We are excited to enhance the protection of nearly 18 million Microsoft 365 users by integrating with Microsoft 365 Backup Storage. The recent introduction of our BaaS for Microsoft 365 reaffirms our dedication to delivering innovative features and capabilities that harness the strength and dependability of the Veeam Data Platform, ensuring business continuity,” said Veeam CTO Danny Allan.

At Microsoft Ignite, Veeam previewed this integration, demonstrating the ability to rapidly and effectively restore large amounts of Microsoft 365 data, a vital function for reducing downtime during ransomware attacks or other data loss incidents.

Richard Riley, General Manager of Low Code and Content Services at Microsoft, said, “Microsoft 365 Backup Storage facilitates high-speed, point-in-time recovery for data in Microsoft 365 environments.” He added that the integration with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 provides customers with resilience, efficient backup, and quick data restoration to maintain productivity in Microsoft 365 environments.

‘Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365' leads the market in Microsoft 365 backup, showcasing its extensive use in safeguarding a significant number of Microsoft 365 users. The service encompasses various Microsoft 365 services, including Microsoft Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft Teams.

Veeam is progressing with the integration between Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 Backup through their backup APIs, and expects to make the updated Veeam offering generally available within 90 days after Microsoft 365 Backup Storage becomes available, as per the company's announcement.
