Overview

Modern defence operations are shaped by the ability to collect, protect, process and act upon data at speed. Sensor feeds, surveillance imagery, operational systems, logistics platforms, cyber operations and AI-enabled applications are generating unprecedented volumes of structured and unstructured data across the Defence Forces.

As India moves towards greater networking and data centricity, jointness and AI adoption, the underlying data infrastructure must simultaneously address sovereignty, availability, interoperability, resilience and scale.

The Future-Ready Defence leadership roundtable, convened by Tech Observer Magazine in association with Hitachi Vantara, brings together senior technology and information-systems leadership from the Armed Forces, Coast Guard, Defence Cyber Agency, DRDO and the Ministry of Defence to examine how India can build a trusted, resilient and AI-ready data foundation spanning strategic data centres, command environments and distributed operational infrastructure.

Discussion Points

Sovereign Data Infrastructure for Defence

  • Custody and control: where mission data resides and who holds the keys.
  • Trusted supply chain: assurance across hardware, software and service partners.
  • Shared services: sovereign platforms serving multiple commands without dilution.

Building the Data Foundation for Defence AI

  • Training-grade pipelines: throughput and capacity that keep GPUs fed.
  • Data quality and lineage: curation, labelling and provenance officers can trust.
  • Pilot to operations: the groundwork that moves AI out of the lab.

Mission Data Survivability and Cyber Resilience

  • Immutability and isolation: copies an adversary cannot reach or alter.
  • Proven recovery: clean restoration rehearsed, measured and evidenced.
  • Continuity under attack: keeping critical systems available through an incident.

From Data Silos to Joint Decision Advantage

  • Interoperability: common standards across services and agencies.
  • Shared operational picture: separate holdings resolved into one view.
  • Access with discipline: sharing that respects classification and need-to-know.

Managing Unstructured Defence Data at Scale

  • Imagery and telemetry: ingesting sensor and video volumes without bottlenecks.
  • Find it again: classification, metadata and retrieval across petabytes.
  • Cost discipline: tiering and retention as volumes outgrow budgets.

Data Infrastructure from Core to Edge

  • Forward deployment: trusted infrastructure at constrained locations.
  • Disconnected operations: working through intermittent links and resyncing cleanly.
  • One control plane: uniform policy from strategic data centre to platform edge.
