Over 5,500 seats for MBBS and BDS courses are still lying vacant even after holding several round of counselling, SC has directed that these seats must be filled up from a pool of qualified 55,000 students to maintain 1:10 ratio.

Over 5,500 seats for MBBS and BDS courses are still lying vacant in even after holding several rounds of counselling for . The Director General of Health Services (DGHS), which is responsible for conducting the NEET 2017 counselling informed the Supreme Court that over 5,500 seats are still lying vacant in deemed universities. The top court directed that these seats must be filled up from a pool of qualified 55,000 students to maintain 1:10 ratio.

“As long as, for the seats which have fallen vacant, the ratio is maintained at 1:10, we do not perceive any difficulty. If 1:10 ratio is not sufficient, the Director General of Health Services is granted liberty to get into the larger NEET list. We order accordingly,” the bench said.

The Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud was hearing the petition for extension of the deadline for final round of counselling for deemed universities. The apex court has extended the deadline till September 7 for final round of counselling in deemed universities and clarified that extension has only been given for deemed universities and no further extension will be granted.

The mop-up round is last step of counselling for seats in each states. In this round, those candidates, who register for it, but are not allotted any college in the two previous rounds of counselling are considered.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate admission to MBBS and BDS were held on May 7, 2017. NEET- UG replaces the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges themselves. Undergraduate courses at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research JIPMER are outside the NEET's purview.
