Dhaka — Mobile operator company deducted Tk55 from the SIM card balance of a customer named Abdul Qayyum without any reason. Authorities did not respond to a request for comment. On Sunday, Abdul Qayyum took part in a public hearing on the activities of the telecommunications services and regulators and sought redress for the incident.

Abdul Qayyum sent a legal notice to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission () chairman and the chief executive of Banglalink to get back the money deducted at one stage.

Banglalink finally returned Tk45 to that customer after four-five months. However, he has not yet received a refund of Tk10.

After learning about the matter, Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) directed a summon to Banglalink and asked him to take the matter seriously.

Md. Abdul Qayyum said: “Back in the 2019 incident telco operator Banglalink deducted Tk55 from my SIM in a few points. I did not understand why money was being deducted from my mobile balance. But I contacted them to find out the reason. Then they informed me that they were looking into the matter.”

“A few days later, they said that I had launched an idea service. Money has been deducted for this. I saw in the apps that I did not start any service. No charges have been levied for this. Then I asked them for a call list. They gave various excuses and said that the money is not going to be refunded at the moment. Again, I contacted helpline 121. Then the same thing was said from there.”

He said, “Even after contacting 121, when my problem was not solved, later I sent a legal notice along with Zahurul Haque.”

Then Banglalink replied to my legal notice. There they said, I have been refunded Tk55. But they gave me back Tk45. So far Tk10 has not been refunded. I think Banglalink has stolen my money. They returned Tk45 after various steps. So, do you know the amount of money they have taken from the common people?

Distinguishing these issues, BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder said, “I will thank you very much.” Thank you. Such allegations are found against many of the service providers. I am asking the concerned officer to summon Banglalink considering your case as an idol case.”
