Demand for tech products shoot up in Bangladesh amidst pandemic

The stricter lockdown announcement to curb the Covid-19 infection has increased the demand for technology products in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka

Dhaka — The stricter lockdown announcement to curb the Covid-19 infection has increased the demand for technology products in the capital Dhaka. On Tuesday talking to several vendors around the capital it emerged that, demand for tech products amid pandemic surged nearly 50-60%, although slow import process caused hiked price.

Besides, to meet up the demand for tech products most retailers are moving online. Datatech Center, manager, Babu Ahmed said, “Due to Covid-19, most of the offices shifted to online, as a result, consumer buying tech products such as webcams, headphones and laptop stands and many more,”

We are moving to online and home delivery service for convenience, we will send products via home delivery courier service, he added.

Another IT shop manager Mamun Chowdhury said, “We are already packed with orders, for Dhaka city products with minimal Tk60 charge delivering tech products as movement restricts has been imposed to curb Covid-19,”

Since last year sells of tech products spiked due to online classes, home office and TikTok. Pandemic, fortunately, made the public tech-savvy due to virtual connectivity, he added.

Computer Village, salesman, Sajjad Rahman Milon, said, “Demand has risen, we are delivering products online, taking and delivering to home. Price rose in the meantime as most of IT products comes from China, Korea, Taiwan.”

Citing demand for laptops he said, earlier people were interested in buying new laptops but as economic downturn individuals purchasing used or refurbished laptop which mainly come from developed countries such as Dubai, USA, China.

Computer technician Walid Hossain from the Mirpur area said, “It's true that demand for IT products soared although quality remained similar. Last time a Remax headphone was sold at Tk90-120 in now we sold at Tk130-210.”

Highlighting demand for mobile accessories he said, now everyone holds a smartphone, now they talk more than ever before. Phone charger, cover, screen protector, mobile gaming keyboard, and router demand increased in the market. Since last year, we are taking orders via IMO, WhatsApp and sending to their home via delivery services,”
