NEIR to strengthen digital security: Telecom Minister

If it is not brought under control, the situation can take a terrible turn.

Dhaka: In the National Equipment Identity Register () has been launched on a trial basis to curb illegal and counterfeit handsets. Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar inaugurated the event through a virtual platform in Dhaka today.

Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, the Minister noted that NEIR is a historic milestone in the telecom sector, adding that along with the massive expansion of telecommunication technology, network of digital crime has increased at a tremendous rate. If it is not brought under control, the situation can take a terrible turn.

“This includes illegal handset smuggling and digital security. We have launched NEIR to address this challenge which will be fruitful in these areas. This method is one of the tools to keep the people of the country safe from deception.”

He directed the concerned to remain vigilant so that the people do not suffer the slightest suffering in this newly introduced system.

He said the main goal of introducing this method in the field of digital security is to prevent mobile theft, looting and government revenue evasion.

He emphasized that has to ensure registration of each existing set automatically.

He urged the people to pay special attention to ensure that they do not suffer under any circumstances. “Many mobile users are not educated, we have to do the registration,” he said, warning that no complaints should be received from any users. If the customer suffers for these, the purpose of the great work will fade away.

 At a meeting on various activities of BTRC on 13 May 2019, the project was adopted with these ground breaking activities in continuation of the Minister's directive to introduce NEIR under the management of BTRC.

Senior officials of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications and BTRC and heads of companies under the Department of Posts and Telecommunications and representatives of various private telco establishments were virtually present. The speakers referred to it as a unique milestone in the history of technology development in the country.
