DigitalOcean launched its first datacenter in India in Bangalore in June 2016 and after a year, India has now become its fastest growing international market. In an interview with TechObserver.in M Kalam, Prabhakar Jayakumar who heads India business as India Country Manager says that globally, DigitalOcean has more than one million users and supports tens of thousands of engineering teams who rely on DigitalOcean to run their workloads and now Indian developers are also banking on it for software development.
There is stiff competition in cloud computing space. How DigitalOcean differentiates itself from AWS, Microsoft, Google and Alibaba?
We have always focused on keeping our products simple and intuitive to adopt. While the other cloud providers have focused their energy on large enterprises and legacy companies, we have remained dedicated to creating better tools for developers who want to run and scale applications in the cloud.
Apart from providing a simple yet performant cloud platform, we offer pay-as-you-go pricing which is simple and transparent. We have also focused on building a true community of developers to help foster the industry and support them as they build the products of the future.
Our community site provides extensive tutorials and guides for developers learning to work with Linux and developers seeking to create complex setups within their infrastructure. Along with this, we offer 24X7 support to all of our customers free of charge.
You launched your first datacenter last year. How has been India business doing?
Yes, we launched our first datacenter in India, which was our 12th datacenter globally, in Bangalore in June 2016. Over the past year, India has become DigitalOcean’s fastest growing international market. Globally, DigitalOcean has more than one million users and supports tens of thousands of engineering teams who rely on our platform to run their workloads.
The requirements of developers and startups are the same universally – they care about a cloud platform that is simple, performant, feature-rich and easy on the pocket and we fulfills these requirements. We are focused on doing the heavy-lifting on the infrastructure side, letting developers channelise their energies on building applications that solve real customer problems.
What are the key verticals that are driving the demand for DigitalOcean in India?
We provides a platform that developers love and engineering teams trust to build, deploy and scale applications in the cloud. Our infrastructure is used by teams and companies building innovative, next generation businesses on the cloud, across multiple industries, including e-commerce, adtech, healthcare and financial services. DigitalOcean’s developer community is engaged and active, with one of the largest libraries of open source resources available in the world.
You said that India business is growing, so what are your future plans in India?
As far as our future plans are concerned, we will continue to focus on building tools individual developers and engineering teams love to use and also build the most active and engaged community possible. Our goal is to empower developers and software companies around the world to build amazing things, and our robust, affordable, and simple infrastructure is making the cloud more accessible than ever. India is poised to unleash a tremendous amount of innovation in the next decade and we want to be there to support every business to grow and succeed.
There is huge skills gap for cloud developers and data scientists. Do you see DigitalOcean playing any role in addressing this challenge?
Outside of including relevant content in the formal academic curriculum for University students, there are several companies that offer free and paid courses that people could use to upskill themselves. Also, there is a lot of relevant content available online that people could consume at their convenience to get themselves abreast of the latest developments in the cloud space. For example, the DigitalOcean community site provides thousands of tutorials and guides that provide intuitive, step-by-step instructions to help developers seeking to create complex setups within their cloud infrastructure.
